Forge a Chef Knife - November 16+17

Class size is limited to 4 students.

In this two day class we will work together to forge a wa-handled Japanese style kitchen style knife from 1084 carbon steel bar stock. We’ll cover not only the forging but also heat treating, grinding, sharpening, and making a two piece handle(if time allows).

Class will be held at Isaiah Schroeder Knifeworks. My shop is located at 1516 Gilson St. in Madison, WI and it’s within walking distance to a coffee shop and restaurants, several hotels are just a short drive or bike ride away if you’re coming from out of town.

Students will offered the option to purchase the cross pein forging hammer and two pairs of flat tongs(1/8”+1/4”) that they learn to use during the class for an additional $200.

The goal is for each student to leave with a finished knife to take home, and the skills to do it again!

  • Class materials will be provided.

  • Class fee is non-refundable after 30 days from class start.

  • If fewer than 2 people sign up class will be cancelled.

  • Each day class starts at 9am and usually goes until around 5pm with 1 hr. lunch break. The class may go longer if needed or end early if everybody is done.
